Does the recipient need the certificate or the full judgment?
Florida Health explicitly describes its certificate as an abstract of information from the judgment. A request for the final judgment, decree or certified court order should therefore be clarified with the receiving institution, not automatically answered by purchasing a vital certificate. An apostille does not add missing terms, pages or legal finality to the underlying record.
What if the divorce was finalized recently?
The state health department says forwarding a dissolution report from the clerk to Vital Statistics takes approximately 60 days. If the dissolution is more recent and immediate evidence is needed, its guidance points to the county clerk. This is separate from the time needed to certify a record, obtain an apostille and deliver it overseas.
Is a court website printout enough?
For the judgment route, ask the issuing clerk how to obtain a certified copy suitable for foreign use, with its certification and all required pages. For the vital-record route, obtain the State Registrar or Clerk certification accepted by Florida. Do not have a private notary certify a photocopy of a court-filed public record.
Which pages need translation for use abroad?
Confirm whether the foreign recipient needs translation of every judgment page, certification and attached apostille. Record-copy fees, apostille, optional assistance and delivery are separate costs. Recognition of the divorce, remarriage, custody or the judgment’s legal effect requires a qualified lawyer in the relevant jurisdiction; administrative apostille support does not decide those issues.
Why do divorce apostille fees and timing vary?
Florida’s ordinary apostille fee is $10 for an eligible State Registrar dissolution certificate. A Clerk-certified judgment falls under the $20 category, including the Certificate of Incumbency. These government fees exclude record issuance, private assistance, translation and shipping. Recent registration, certified-copy production or corrections can affect the overall deadline before apostille processing begins.
Related questions
Is the dissolution certificate the full decree?
No. Florida Health issues an abstract; request the judgment from the relevant county clerk if the full decision is required.
Can I use a screenshot from the court website?
A screenshot does not replace the official certified record required for state authentication.
Does the apostille make the divorce recognized abroad?
No. It authenticates the relevant signature and seal. Recognition and legal effect are separate issues.
