Whose signature does the apostille authenticate?
For a government-issued record, that may be the qualifying public official’s signature. For a private declaration prepared through a notarial route, authentication concerns the notarial act. A notarized statement saying “I completed this degree” is not automatically equivalent to a university-issued academic record. Ask the recipient whether it needs an issuer-certified record, a particular notarial act or a different document altogether.
Does an apostille guarantee acceptance abroad?
Use these as separate checks before ordering. Does the document contain the information the recipient needs? Is an accepted translation required? Does the procedure also require an academic evaluation, legal review or another qualification? Those checks concern the document’s use. Paying for authentication before resolving them can leave you with a correctly authenticated document that is unsuitable for your application.
What should you confirm before ordering the service?
Keep a copy of the receiving office’s checklist and match each requested item to a document you actually possess. Identify the issuing office, country of use and any instruction about certification or translation. If the request only says “legalized document,” ask which authentication route and document version it means. A preliminary review can help organize the route; it cannot decide the foreign office’s final acceptance.
