What does each type of certification actually verify?
If a recipient asks for a notarized translator statement, confirm the required wording and signer before arranging the appointment. A Florida notary cannot act as both translator and notary on the same translation. If an apostille is requested on that notarial act, the preparation must identify the correct state route. Apostilling a translator statement is not a substitute for an apostille on a public birth or court record when the recipient requires that original record authenticated.
Is a certified translation the same as a sworn translation?
“Certified,” “notarized” and “sworn” can refer to different requirements in different jurisdictions. Share the recipient’s written checklist with the provider and ask it to name the deliverables: translated pages, certification statement, notarial certificate and any apostille. Ask whether the apostille page and attached certifications are included in the translation. Price each required step, rather than automatically adding every possible stamp.
Does the apostille page also need translation?
A completed apostille page can only be translated after it exists. When the recipient requests it, translate its numbered fields, added names, dates, seals and authentication text with the underlying record; translating the French heading alone is insufficient. Do not detach the certificate simply to create a translation copy or request a second apostille solely because the first page is being translated. If a separate translator declaration is to be authenticated, that is another notarial document and needs its own approved chain. Ask the recipient whether it wants the apostille translated at all, in which language, by which translator and with which certification. No rule established here requires every apostille worldwide to receive a certified or notarized translation.
Related questions
Does USCIS always require notarization?
The general translation requirement in 8 CFR 103.2(b)(3) specifies translator certification, not notarization. Follow any applicable case-specific instruction.
Can the translator notarize their own work?
Florida’s apostille FAQ says the translator cannot be the person who notarizes the translation.
Does an apostille certify translation accuracy?
It authenticates the relevant official/notarial signature, rather than independently checking the translated wording.
Does an apostille’s French heading remove the translation question?
No. The recipient decides whether the completed certificate and its added information must be translated. Ask about the whole certificate with the underlying record.
